WLA Water Quality Committee Report

A report was given by Jean on the water quality of the lake.

Several Shoreland Water Quality Protection Fact Sheets regarding homeowner's vegetation maintenance and stormwater management were circulated at the meeting. A copy of each and some past VLAP water quality reports have been posted in the Resource Center for your viewing.   The trophic state of Island Pond degraded to mesotrophic in 2001 from its prior higher quality classification of oligotrophic in 1986.  This unnaturally accelerated change is attributed to human activity called cultural eutrophication.

Stormwater runoff can have a serious impact on the water quality of Island Pond.  Without properly maintained vegetation buffers, intact shorelines and appropriately designed pathways to the water, stormwater runoff flushes pollutants and nutrients directly into the water and adversely affects the quality.  Please read the "Shoreland Homeowner's Guide to Stormwater Management" for more information on best practices.
